Idle-Free Taipei’s “What a Waste!” Photo Contest!!!
Last year, Idle-Free Taipei’s idea to turn off scooter engines at traffic lights was entered in a “Carbon Reducing Contest” hosted by the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Bureau of Energy. We took third place in the contest and were given NT$5,000 in prize money.
Over here at Idle-Free Taipei, we’ve already saved a lot of money by going “idle-free,” so we thought we’d give the NT$5,000 back to YOU in the form of a PHOTO CONTEST!!

What’s the contest?
Your mission: Find the most wasteful intersection in Taipei City.
Every day, scooters in Taipei collectively waste around NT$900,000 worth of fuel just by waiting for traffic lights to turn green. At some intersections, as many as 70 scooters can be idling for over 80 seconds each, unnecessarily wasting gas and polluting YOUR beautiful city.
We want you to find the worst idling “hot spots.” To enter the contest, all you need to do is take a picture of a crowd of scooters at a red light and send it to idlefreetaipei@gmail.com by August 31! The number of scooters in each photo submitted will be manually counted, and the photographer who captures the most amount of fuel being wasted will win NT$5,000 cash.
If your photograph has the most* idling** scooters in it, you win!
Send your photograph to idlefreetaipei@gmail.com by August 31. Each entry will be looked at and counted by hand. After reviewing your entry, we will post your photograph in our Contest Gallery along with your name, the location of the photograph, and the number of scooters in your photograph.

There aren’t any judges or opinions. The highest number wins.
*The scooters must be clearly visible. We cannot assume that there are any scooters behind a bus, car, etc. If you were thinking of going up Taipei 101, please make sure that you can still see clearly see and count individual scooters.
** The scooters in your photograph must be in traffic. Parking lots do not count!
Who is eligible?
Anybody in Taipei City with a camera. There are no age, nationality, or gender restrictions.
Because Idle-Free Taipei is currently only operating out of Taipei City, we are only accepting entries from photographs taken in Taipei City. Along with your entry, we’re asking photographers to please include the intersection in your photograph, the day of the week, and the approximate time of day.
How can I submit my photograph(s)?
Please email all entries as an attachment to idlefreetaipei@gmail.com with “photo contest” in the subject line, along with your name, the name you want to appear with your photograph in the Contest Gallery, the intersection seen in your photograph, the approximate time of day the photograph was taken, and your telephone number.
What next?
After you’ve submitted your photograph, you should be able to see it in our Gallery at www.idle-freetaipei.com within a day or two. Each photograph will be individually looked at and the scooters will be manually counted by a real person at Idle-Free Taipei headquarters.
In the meantime, feel free to browse through the other entries in the Gallery to see and explore the rest of www.idle-freetaipei.com to learn more about idling.
